As autumn is coming, there is a rapid increase in the number of outpatients with diarrhea. For example, the daily outpatients in Children's Hospital on the 6th, 7th are up to 2,500, of which children with diarrhea account for about three tenths.
Xu Huifu, director of the pediatric department of Guangzhou First Hospital, said that it is a wrong way to treat child with diarrhea with Norfloxacin in half of adult dosage, a kind of broad spectrum antimicrobial drugs.
He explained that Norfloxacin has obvious effect on the treatment of intestinal diseases due to gram-negative bacteria infection. However, the animal test of this drug showed that the damage on young animals’ joints and cartilage occurred when they took over large dosage. He reminded that this drug should be used with cautions for children under sixteen years, especially for infants who are in the term of bone growth to avoid some side effects such as bone and joint diseases and delay of bone growth.
No abuse of antibiotics for diarrhea.
Tang Zhongzhi, director of emergency department of Wuhan General Hospital of Guangzhou Military Region said that antibiotic drugs such as Norfloxacin, should be used under the guidance of doctors, or it would rather threats the life than treat diarrhea.
Diarrhea is divided into non-infectious diarrhea and infectious diarrhea. It is unnecessary for the treatment of non-infectious diarrhea to take antibiotics; antibiotics only are used to treat diarrhea with bacterial infection such as dysentery, cholera, and other kinds of severe diarrhea.
He pointed out that if use antibiotics for non-infectious diarrhea in, they will bring a variety of side effects. Thus, it is better for patients with diarrhea to go to hospital for treatment and take the right medicine.
