2008 National Influenza Prevention Summit was held on September 6 in Guangzhou. Li Qun, deputy director of Emergency office of China Disease Prevention and Control Center said: "The flu will infect 5-15% of the total population of people. There are 3-5 million cases of severe influenza each year due to the influenza pandemic, and this makes about 250,000 to 500,000 people dead." Experts attending the meeting shared that:" The flu will bring a wide range of influenza complications and even life-threatening risk on the four high-risk groups such as children between 6-month-old and 5-year-old, the elderly aged over 50, patients with heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases and medical personnel and these people should getting flu shots as soon as possible. "
The incidence of flu in pre-school children may be more than 40%
Professor Lei Chunlian, doctor of Pediatric department of Xi'an Jiaotong University First Affiliated Hospital, explained the harm of influenza on children from such aspects as economic burden, social impact, and so on at the meeting. Influenza infection in children has the highest proportion among different age groups, as the incidence of flu in pre-school children may be more than 40% and that in school children may be up to 30%. Influenza causes a variety of complications, including pneumonia, bronchitis, otitis media, pericarditis, encephalitis, nephrotic syndrome and so on, which may result in the death of children and directly cause the disease burden and indirectly economic burden on sick children’s families.
