Zhuang Zhong (an alias), was an editor (night shift) for a media in Hangzhou. The long-term work on the night shift made it more and more difficult for her to go to sleep. In the most serious cases, she lay awake night after night. Due to the sleep problem, she resigned from the work and stopped the life style which she has been used to, to help her sleep a lot better. But even with the most serious insomnia, she refused to take sleeping pills, because she was afraid of drug addiction, which was supposed to have bad physical impact on her health.
Yesterday, Chen Zhiyu director of Psychotropic department in the No. 7 People Hospital Hangzhou, said many people would stay awake rather than use sleeping pills. In fact, this is a misunderstanding in knowledge.
Chen Zhiyu said that there is tolerance to drugs. As the patients’ tolerance increases, they will have the side effects of drug addiction. Once the habit is formed, the patients will suffer withdrawal symptoms and have some psychiatric symptoms such as hallucinations, auditory hallucinations and disturbance of consciousness etc.
In order to prevent drug abuse, Chinese law clearly states that the citizen must buy the sleeping pills with prescription from the drug retail chain stores or the medical institutions.
The key criteria to drug addiction is that the dose of drug will be gradually increased, such as taking two pills may makes you feel better this month, while next month you must take four pills to ease the symptoms.
