It’s the first year after the introducing of “Chronic diseases prevention and control work plan (2012-2015) ". Although China has taken a number of measures against chronic diseases, there are still many serious challenges, including the low awareness of chronic diseases, insufficient recognition, irrational allocation of health resources and lack of qualified personnel for chronic disease prevention and control.
At present, chronic diseases (including cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, diabetes, malignancy, chronic respiratory diseases) have become a major public health problem in China. There are 260 million patients of chronic diseases, which means one in five total population.
It’s reported that there are nearly 600 million people (580 million people, reported in 2010), nearly half of the total population, facing one or more risk factors leading with chronic diseases, in which 70% to 85% occurs under the age of 65.
Because of the high disability and death rate of chronic disease, it’s reported that deaths caused by chronic disease had accounted for 85% of the total death, and the burden caused by chronic disease had consisted 70% of the total disease burden.
In order to curb the spread of chronic diseases, the China Medical Education Association and the China Pharmaceutical Association of Newspapers intend to launch education programs for scientific prevention, control and reasonable treatment of chronic diseases, in dozens of central cities within two years. Meanwhile, participants of these programs will be presented the "serial books for rational drug usage ", edited and published by the China Medical Education Association.
The serial public program of chronic disease prevention and treatment will be initiated in Beijing on July 12, 2012.
